Year of the Dog: what it does and doesn't tell you
A Dog year means the year branch is Xu, dry yang earth at autumn's end, classed as a store of fire. The branch does not record loyalty or worry.

What the Dog year branch means in the Four Pillars
Dog is the common name for the Earthly Branch Xu (戌). A Four Pillars chart has eight characters across year, month, day, and hour. In a Year of the Dog label, the animal identifies the year branch.
Xu is earth, on the yang side of the cycle. Yang and yin are polarity labels, not genders. This is late-autumn earth: dry ground as the weather cools toward winter. As a month, Xu closes autumn. Xu is a storage branch, traditionally classed as a store of fire. Its main hidden stem is yang earth, and it also holds yin metal and yin fire. The picture is dry soil holding leftover heat, with a little metal in the mix. "Store of fire" names an element the branch is said to keep. It does not name a temperament.
Dog years share Xu and rotate the Heavenly Stem through the five yang stems. The same animal, twelve years apart, is not the same year pillar. Charts here change the year at Start of Spring, usually February 3, 4, or 5. Lunar New Year groupings can assign a different animal to births in January and early February. Xu as a month, day, or hour branch has the same Dog correspondence.
Common Western zodiac-style readings and why we don't do that
Pages written like zodiac sketches often call the Dog loyal, honest, and anxious, a guardian with a worried mind. The pet does the work in those sentences.
Late-autumn earth cannot be a loyalty test. Honesty and worry are not among the Five Elements. Counting earth on the chart would not measure either quality. Traditionally, the year pillar is considered the outermost layer: the birth year as a setting, sometimes early surroundings. Keep that as a tendency.
What to look at instead
Look up the Day Master, the Heavenly Stem of the day pillar. The year branch does not choose it. The date is the start; near midnight, the birth time can decide the day, and the hour pillar needs that time as well. Then look at the month branch for the season the other characters are read in.
You can observe how Xu's dry earth relates to the Day Master, and how the fire stored in the branch is traditionally said to relate to it. Storage is a way of saying something is held rather than obvious. You can observe that holding. It is not a trait to live up to.
